Tribute to Pozar Thermal Baths in Greece
Just outside the city of Edessa in Pieria is Loutra Pozar, or Pozar Baths. Located at the base of the Voras Mountains and approximately an hour and a half from Thessaloniki, Loutra Pozar is relatively unknown to tourists, but well-frequented by the locals who are aware of the healing properties of the springs.
What makes the Pozar Baths stand out from other hot springs across Greece is the proximity of the hot spring and the cold, the rushing streams which are located right next to each other and make for a unique bathing experience that will leave visitors rested and recharged.
The accessibility to both the hot and cold waters isn’t the only unique thing about Loutra Pozar. The springs are set in the heart of nature. They’re the perfect environment to unplug and truly relax year-round.
A Guide to the Pozar Thermal Baths
The Waters and Facilities at the Pozar Thermal Baths
Pozar hot springs sit at an altitude of 390 meters above sea level. They are created by the penetration of rainwater into the ground where it is naturally heated by the earth. The heated water rises back up through the ground and as it does so is enriched with minerals and other elements to form the Stream of Áyios Nikólaos or Thermopotamos River.
The water remains at a consistent temperature of 37 degrees Celsius and is said to possess healing properties against things such as rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis, kidney diseases, dermatological disorders, respiratory problems, gynecological issues and can help improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and release tension. Key minerals present in the waters include Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, Manganese, Magnesium, Silicon, Fluorine, and Iron.
At Loutra Pozar you will find more than just one hot spring and a cold-running stream. In the hot pool, reinvigorate yourself by standing under the naturally occurring, 20-meter-high thermal waterfall. The complex is comprised of the large, outdoor hot bath as well as 2 indoor pools, 2 individual steam rooms, and 48 individual baths. The newest addition to the facilities was added in 2005 and includes 6 individual pools and artificial waterfalls. Pozar’s healing baths range in temperature from 30-38 degrees Celsius.
In addition to a range of thermal baths, there are several hiking and nature trails surrounding Loutra Pozar. There are stairs that lead to a cave at the top of the waterfalls with amazing views.
Massage Therapy at the Pozar thermal baths
For those who want to make this ancient bathing experience even more relaxing, Pozar offers a range of modern massage services at the Rehabilitation Center of Pozar. It’s recommended to schedule the massage first and then enter the baths. The massage prepares the body to more easily release toxins and accumulated salts and simultaneously absorb all the beneficial elements (metals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, barium, chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, zinc and trace elements such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, sodium, etc.) when the person enters the water because these elements are already present in the human body.
How to Get to Loutra Pozar
